How to Personalize your Windows 10 Computer

If you have bought a computer in 2019 or just upgraded your Microsoft’s Windows operating system, your computer probably is using Microsoft’s Windows 10. When you start your computer, it may have a background that you do not like, or you may need your computer to automatically go on sleep mode or turn itself off when left unattended. If you need to know how to do any of these for your Microsoft’s Windows 10 computer, then you are at the right place. What we will explain is relevant for the Version 1903 of Windows 10 but may be relevant for other versions of Windows 10.

Changing your computer’s screen background

To start, you need to right-click on an empty space on your computer desktop. A window will appear; then you need to click “Personalize”:

Then the Settings app will open. On the left of the Settings app window, you will be able select what you need to change.

You need to select “Background” under Personalization on the left of the app window (The Background option may already be the first page you are on). On the main page of the app, you can click on the downward “Background” arrow to open a menu.

If you select the first option “Picture”, then you will be given the option to browse a collection of images, and you can select whichever one you prefer. Once you pick the image, your background screen will change almost instantly. If you pick the other option “Solid color”, then again your background screen will change to that color.

And if you pick the third option “Slideshow”, you will be able to either select an available album or an album saved somewhere else on your computer. You will also be given the option to change the time interval between the appearances of any two images in your selected album or the option to change the order of appearance with the “Shuffle” button.

Scheduling your computer to automatically go to sleep or turn itself off

If you constantly leave your computer unattended, then setting your computer to either turn off or go to sleep automatically can be useful. On the same Personalization app, you need to click “Lock screen” on the left of the app’s window.

Then select “Screen timeout settings”. On the next window, you will have two main options. One is to schedule your computer to turn itself off, either when it is plugged in or on battery power, and the other option is to schedule your computer to go to sleep, either when it is plugged in or on battery power.

If you would like to test the Lock screen functionality, you can set a short time on the Lock screen window, say 1 minute, and wait to see if your computer will go to sleep or will turn itself off after that time.
